Two Options for Free Income Tax Assistance for Low-to Mid-Income Taxpayers
AARP Tax-Aide
Free, in-person tax help for low to middle income taxpayers. We focus on taxpayers 50 and older, but the program is available to all tax filers who meet the local income guidelines. AARP membership is not required. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.
How does AARP Tax-Aide work?
- Pick up a tax help packet at one of the libraries listed below.
- Prepare all of your paperwork.
- Register for a tax visit at AzTax-Aide.org.
select Pima County to see locations - Attend your tax meeting with all your paperwork. Taxpayers without the required documents cannot be assisted.
Required paperwork:
- All relevant 2023 tax documents and competed forms from tax packet
- Your 2022 tax return
- Picture ID for taxpayer and spouse, both spouses must be present to sign documents!
- Social Security card for each family member
- Proof of income, including W2s and 1099s
- Forms 5498-SA and 1099-SA for Health Savings Accounts and 1085A for Affordable Care Act
- Account and routing numbers for direct deposit of refunds.
If you are taking deductions
- Documentation for deductible expenses such as home mortgage interest or real estate taxes

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offers free tax preparation to families and individuals with incomes up to $73,000. GetYourRefund (GYR) Kiosk is a partnership between the United Way and Pima County's Community & Workforce Development Department.
How does GetYourRefund (GYR) Kiosk work? A valid phone number and email address is required to use this service.
- Bring your necessary identification and tax documents for a 30 minute intake interview.
- The VITA Intake Specialist will help you securely upload pictures of your documents to GetYourRefund
- VITA tax preparers will virtually prepare your taxes, answer questions, and review your final return before it is e-filed via phone.
Required paperwork:
- Identification: Social Security card or acceptable alternative issued by the Social Security Administration for each person (including all dependents) listed on the tax return.
- Photo ID for taxpayer and spouse, if applicable
- Proof of income (W2s, 1099s, etc.)
- Documentation of all expenses
- Form 1095-A if anyone in the household is insured through the marketplace (Healthcare.gov)
- AZ Form 201 if filing for the Arizona Property Tax Credit and rent your home/apartment
Recommended paperwork:
- Account and routing number for direct deposit
- Prior year tax return

Appointments are available and have priority. Walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis, as capacity allows.
