(TUCSON, Ariz.) – The Pima County Public Library is pleased to announce the permanent appointment of Amber Mathewson to the position of Library Director. Ms. Mathewson had served as the Interim Library Director beginning October 2016 following the resignation of Melinda Cervantes who held the position since 2012.
Having spent more than 25 years in the field, Ms. Mathewson brings not only a wealth of experience but a passion for literacy, intellectual freedom, and creating welcoming places for people of all ages.
Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry says, “As Interim Library Director, Ms. Mathewson continued the exemplary service of our library system on behalf of the residents of Pima County.” She received the highest score in a panel interview process and was recommended by the panel to be permanently appointed. Mr. Huckelberry concurred with that recommendation.
Before serving as the Interim Director, Ms. Mathewson was the Deputy Director of Strategic Initiatives, during which time she helped expand Library programming and services in workforce development, as well as health and literacy.
Ms. Mathewson has been with the Library since 1991 and has held positions at multiple libraries, including Joyner-Green Valley, Caviglia-Arivaca, Miller-Golf Links, and Eckstrom-Columbus. As Deputy Director, she oversaw the Programs & Partners Office, Collection Development and Technical Services, Communications and Systems, and Delivery Services.
In addition, she’s played a vital role helping to develop the Library’s newest Community Impact Plan, which places strong emphasis on education, innovation, and community.
Of the appointment to Library Director, Ms. Mathewson says, “I have the energy and enthusiasm to lead the vibrant staff of the Library into our next era of service. I’m very much looking forward to serving in this new role and continuing to address the needs of our culturally rich community through programming and services that are accessible to everyone.”
