Toole Avenue was named after James H. Toole.
Toole was born in 1824 in New York, began his career in the mercantile business in New Orleans, but traveled to California during the gold rush in 1849. The article, "Street Smarts: Toole helped bring railroad to Tucson" chronicles his history as a miner and Union Army officer, and his life in Tucson after the Civil War, including his four terms as mayor.
