Icebreak Contest – Ice Breaking on the Santa Cruz River

The first 100 degree day each year is a special event in Tucson.

Icebreak Days

From 1983-2006, local news station KVOA 4, opens a new window ran a promotion called the Icebreak Contest. The name refers to "the first day the ice breaks" on the Santa Cruz River. The person who correctly guessed the time that the temperature would first hit 100 degrees that year won prizes. Due to a lack of sponsorship, KVOA ended the contest in 2006. The contest was resurrected in 2011.

Historical records for the first annual 100 degree day from 1895-present are available from the National Weather Service at Year-by-year listing of the 1st 100 degree occurrence in Tucson. (No times are made available.) This source also includes current data for the average first occurrence of 100 degree temperatures, as well as updated earliest and latest occurrence records.
