New drivers in Arizona may be required to take a written test, a driving test, or both. Questions on the written driving test are taken from the Arizona Driver License Manual, opens a new window.
The Arizona Department of Transportation: Tests, Manuals and Driving Schools, opens a new window lists alternative cases where a verbal test may be allowed:
- A customer declares that he or she cannot read or has a low reading competency.
- A customer has incorrectly answered a large number of questions on a previous test or has failed a second or third attempt.
- A customer reads in a foreign language and a written test in the foreign language is not available.
