In 1997, the City of Tucson instituted backward parking spaces in areas where there are a lot of bicyclists, including the Fourth Avenue and University Boulevard/Park Avenue areas.
When drivers leave their parking spaces while facing toward the street instead of the curb, a cyclist will be approaching the front of the vehicle, not the rear, so the driver has a much better view of approaching cyclists.
