In my opinion, there is nothing greater than being a mom. I have three amazing kids and I have enjoyed them at each of their stages of life but when asked what age I have found the hardest my answer is always, without hesitation, the newborn stage. I usually get gently admonished, “babies are so cute and easy,” “newborns just sleep all the time,” but if you are like me and have experienced a mood disorder, the postpartum phase can feel isolating and even unbearable at times.
The reality is that 1 in 5 new mothers experience a mood and anxiety disorder after giving birth. Dads aren’t immune either, 1 in 10 develop depression during the postpartum period. The good news is that the conversation is changing and there is help out there. It’s time to raise awareness and start talking about this health issue.
