Yuyi Morales, the award-winning children’s book author and illustrator from Veracruz, Mexico, made a special appearance at the Nuestras Raíces tent at the Tucson Festival of Books 2022. As we celebrate Día del niñx/Día del libro throughout the month of April, I would like to highlight one of Yuyi’s latest books, Dreamers or Soñadores in its Spanish edition. Highlighting the importance of libraries and literacy, Dreamers emphasizes the importance of public libraries and books as a gateway to knowledge especially to those who left their home countries for the United States and became immigrants.
Based on Yuyi’s personal experiences, it is a story that many immigrants to this country can relate to. Highlighting the many incredible gifts immigrants bring with them when they come to a new country to live, the public library plays an important role in uncovering some of the gifts Yuyi has brought along with her from her native Mexico. Yuyi stated, “One day we found a marvelous place called the public library, a discovery that changed our lives forever!”
Her experiences at the library navigating through books as she and her son became familiarized with a new language and culture eventually inspired her to become the great author and illustrator she now is. It was Yuyi's experience with the librarians that led her to realize that the library was a place her family could belong. Feeling at home at the library, Yuyi realized books had become her path for growth after years of visiting the San Francisco Public Library.
Just like Yuyi, the public library serves as a place of inspiration for many of our patrons. The same books Yuyi and her son both learned English from the books they read were some of those same books that eventually inspired her own writing and painting. Her award-winning children's book Dreamers, or Soñadores in Spanish, is a testament to the power of books and libraries, as well as to the perseverance and resilience of newly arrived immigrants to the United States. Celebrating Día del niñx/Día del libro throughout the month of April with books from authors and illustrators such as Yuyi Morales allow us and our children to dream of new worlds and endless possibilities.
