Salt to the Sea is a historical fiction novel set in WWII based around one of the biggest, and most unknown, maritime tragedies in history. The novel follows multiple perspectives as the main characters as they board a ship looking for better lives, but heading toward disaster and tragedy.
This book is incredibly gripping, I was hooked from the first page. Ruta Sepetys' writing style is beautiful and lyrical without without detracting from the story. The characters are all deep and complex and I enjoyed reading from all of their perspectives. This book packs a powerful punch which hits all the harder when you realize that the tragedy isn't fiction. Sepetys puts an incredible effort into researching for her novels, and her dedication shines through in this work. It is, hands down, one of the best books I've read this year.
