In this new blog series, we'll be introducing you to members of the Library's LGBTQ+ Services Committee. Today, we're excited to introduce you to Toby W., who has worked on the committee for almost a quarter of a century!
Let’s begin with a book. Have you discovered or revisited an LGBTQ+ themed book recently that you’d like to tell us about?
Yes, I recently discovered Robert Broder’s Crow & Snow, opens a new window. I think it is perfect for Rainbow Storytime! Broder’s story features endearing characters and charming dialogue. It is about friendship as seen through the eyes of a lonely scarecrow. It is as timeless as love itself.
If you could send one message to LGBTQ+ people in our community, what would it be?
Being a member of the LGBTQ+ Services Committee has given me such a sense of pride and connectedness. I encourage you to explore Tucson’s unique LGBTQ+ offerings to our community to find your own sense of belonging and value!
What are your hopes for future generations of LGBTQ+ youth?
I hope you find your place of acceptance and the strength to accomplish your dreams and goals. I believe your fierce strength and unshakable resolve will take our community to new heights of achievement and success!
What is your favorite color in the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag and why?
I love that violet represents Spirit – our spirit is our essence, our life-force, ourselves!
For how long have you been a member of the committee?
A long time ago, in a coffee shop not so far away (Rainbow Planet Café on 4th Ave), a small group of staff met on our own time to form our committee. With the current Library Director Agnes Griffin‘s help, we officially established our committee. I’m incredibly honored and humbled to have been a part of this committee for almost a quarter of a century!
Why did you decide to join?
To proudly stand with and to serve our LGBTQ+ community and make Tucson/Pima County/Southern Arizona/the World at Large a better place!
What do love most about your work on the committee?
My incredible colleagues and the amazing work we have done over the years and that we continue to do. I’ve always said that I work with intelligent and compassionate people, which is a powerful combination when serving our community. I like to think that our LGBTQ+ Services Committee adds some fabulous, too!
