Let’s talk about voting and the upcoming election

This blog post is by Matthew L., Workforce and Economic Development Librarian.

The Arizona Town Hall, and the YWCA Dr. Laura Banks Reed Center for Gender & Racial Equity are hosting a Tucson Community Town Hall on "Voting and Elections in Arizona." The program sponsors include the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson (LWVGT), Tucson NAACP, LULAC, and Pima County Public Library, among others.

The Town Hall will take place on Thursday, September 5 from 9 am to noon at the YWCA of Southern Arizona (525 N. Bonita Ave.).

Advance registration is required, and breakfast will be provided. Breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m.

Registration is FREE can be completed here.

I spoke with Victor Bowleg, program manager for YWCA’s Center for Gender & Racial Equity, about the purpose of this event.

Why did the YWCA create this event?

The Dr. Laura Banks Reed Center for Gender & Racial Equity continues to seek ways to educate and engage our community. Teaming with the Arizona Town Hall and utilizing the Town Hall model on the important issue of Voting & Elections in Arizona provides an opportunity to engage in civil discourse and stimulate community involvement and empowerment via the ballot.

What will people do at this town hall?

Participants will engage in discussions about voting and elections in Arizona. These discussions will identify opportunities and spark individual and community actions to ensure that Arizona’s voting and elections systems best support the needs of Arizona and its communities.

What do you hope are some of the outcomes, for people individually and for the community?

I hope that people attending will present a variety of perspectives in the Town Hall, feel that their perspectives were heard even if there are disagreements and leave empowered to make a difference in our community.
