Good to know: Himmel Park Library renovation

Himmel Park Library is coming up on a renovation and expansion in 2025. It's a very exciting time! So far, we've enjoyed hearing from our community at two public meetings (and in an online survey)—gathering feedback, answering questions, and working together to envision the future of this special location built in 1961, featuring 4,200 square feet and earning the title of the first branch library located in the City of Tucson.

There have been various additions to this location from 1968 through 2018, when an expansion brought the total square footage to 6,540. Once completed, the 2025 renovation will add even more space, bringing the total size to 9,200 with a 775 square foot exterior reading porch (a reading porch!!!).

What will the renovation look like?

Good question! Most importantly, we want you to know that this renovation will have minimal impact to Himmel Park. In addition, the beautiful donor pavers and benches that are beloved by all who visit will not go away - they will find a new home among the native landscaping.

Approximately half of the library will be demolished , preserving the original reading room. New features will be added, including:

  • New covered entry
  • Increased shelving
  • Larger meeting space
  • Enclosed children’s area
  • Additional computer stations and a laptop bar
  • New study room
  • Expanded staff work areas
  • Larger restrooms
  • Exterior reading porch looking out to the park
  • Improved daylight with views to park
  • Improved low water, native landscaping incorporating previous landscape work
Additional:
  • The estimated start of construction is Spring 2025 with completion around Fall 2026. The project budget is $8,000,000.
