Leerle a tu niño en dos idiomas puede ser divertido y educativo. Tiene muchas ventajas leerles a los niños en dos idiomas. Los niños no solo aprenderán un nuevo idioma, sino también aumentarán su vocabulario al descubrir nuevas palabras. Cuando leen en dos idiomas, no están reduciendo su entendimiento de un idioma, sino están mejorando la compresión en dos idiomas.
Entre más palabras conocen los niños, más les ayudará cuando aprendan a leer. La investigación en el desarrollo de la lectura indica que es más fácil leer una palabra si ya la conocemos. Puedes usar libros para extender el vocabulario de los niños. Una estrategia que se puede usar cuando lean juntos, es buscar palabras en el libro que tengan significados similares o que sean sinónimos.
Lee libros en el idioma que te sientas más cómodo. Pero también trata de leer una variedad de libros para aprender juntos.
Bebés
Cuando leas con tus niños, no solamente leas las palabras. Describe los dibujos y lo que está pasando en la historia. Señala las palabras y los dibujos que les corresponden para poder hacer la conexión entre la palabra en la hoja y su imagen.
Niños de 18 a 36 meses
Deja que los niños repitan las palabras al leer y explícales su significado. Cuando los niños dicen una frase repetida mientras leen, es que están involucrados en el cuento. Hacer esto también les ayuda a aprender la estructura del cuento. Cuando hacen algo divertido mientras leen juntos, los niños se desenvuelven en la experiencia divertida con los libros y eso les ayuda a hacer una conexión en su cerebro entre la diversión y la lectura.
Niños de edad preescolar
Puedes ayudar a los niños a entender palabras que no conocen al explicar las palabras que están leyendo. La investigación en el desarrollo del lenguaje indica que entre más palabras conozcan y entiendan los niños, más amplio será su vocabulario y más fácil aprenderán a leer. Al terminar de leer un cuento juntos, platiquen sobre el cuento con los niños. Esto les ayudará a recordar lo que escucharon y a repasarlo. Repasar lo que sucedió en el cuento también les ayudará a mejorar su conocimiento del vocabulario nuevo porque tendrán la oportunidad de usarlo.
Leer con tus hijos es una actividad que pueden seguir haciendo juntos durante todas las etapas del desarrollo.

Reading to your child in different languages can be fun and educational. There are many advantages to reading to your child in two languages. Not only do they get to learn a new language but it also helps increase their vocabulary by learning new words. Reading to your kids in two languages doesn’t slow down their understanding of one language but enhances their comprehension of both languages.
The more words children know, the better off they will be when they learn to read. Research tells us that it is easier to read a word that you know. You can use books to help expand your children’s vocabulary. As you read together, look for words in the book that have the same meaning, or are synonyms. Building on words your child knows makes it easier to learn new words which will make it easier for your child to understand what they read when they learn to read.
Babies
When you read with your children, don’t just read the words. Talk about the pictures. Describe what is going on. Point out the words and point out the picture that corresponds, that way they can make the connection between the word and the image.
Toddlers
Let your child repeat the words after you and explain the meaning to them. When children say a phrase that is repeated throughout the book with you, they are involved with the story. They also learn the structure of stories. By making an enjoyable experience for your children around books and reading, you are helping them to connect reading with enjoyment.
Preschool
You can help children understand words they may not know by offering a little explanation as you go along. Research shows that the more words your children know and understand, the more vocabulary they have, the easier it will be for them when they begin to read. When you finish a story, talk about it with your child. It will help them to remember what they heard and review it. It helps to reinforce new vocabulary words because they have the opportunity to use the words again.
One thing you can always do, no matter the age, is read to your child.
