Joel D. Valdez Main Library invites you to an art exhibit presented by the Tucson Museum of Art, in partnership with Owl & Panther and YWCA Southern Arizona, on display until July 31, 2024.
The Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block (TMA) partners with local organizations to develop collaborative art programming consisting of gallery conversations and art-making. An example of this work is TMA's "Museum as Sanctuary" program which focuses on the benefits of creative expression, healing, skills development, community building, and language acquisition for immigrant and refugee families. The mixed media works on display were created with Tucson-based organizations Owl & Panther and the YWCA of Southern Arizona. During a two-hour expressive arts workshop, participants reflected upon images, colors, and symbols that represent themselves and their environment. Some questions that prompted this exploration were: What symbols represent you and your environment? And what colors are important to you and your environment?
Owl & Panther's mission is to inspire and support refugees and society in embracing change, life, and hope through healing-centered engagement in expressive arts, community outreach, and collaboration.
YWCA Southern Arizona is committed to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all- with a focus on increasing the economic security of women and families.
