Artist Statement:

I’ve always loved to create art, from the time I was a child. I majored in fine art and art education at Indiana University and graduated with a BA degree. I went to The Ohio State University for my Master’s Degree in Family Relations and Human Development. I worked for several years as a Child Life Specialist, using art and play with hospitalized children and with children with cancer and blood diseases. Art and play can be really healing for children (as well as adults) when they’re going through difficult situations. This was an emotionally challenging job, but also a very rewarding one. Below are Astro Images I’ve taken as well as paintings.

Later, when we moved to the Portland, Oregon area, I taught art for two years at the middle school level and then for twenty-one years at the high school level. I really enjoyed teaching and sharing my love of art with my students. Many of them have gone on in art careers and I have at least three of my former students who are now art teachers, which means a lot to me.

MY ART
I am inspired by nature. My husband and I are amateur astronomers, and I’ve gotten into astrophotography. The night sky and the galaxies and nebulae in our universe often find their way into my work. I’ve started connecting my astrophotos with the beauty that I find in the flora and fauna on our Earth. I want to bring across to the viewer the beauty and the magic that I feel when looking at the night sky and at the natural world. I feel a connection to everything that I paint. My hope is that if we, as humans, feel more connected to the beauty in this world and in each other, that we will be more inclined to treat them gently, with respect.

MEDIA
I love it all! I draw with pencils and colored pencils, I paint in watercolor, acrylic, and oil. I sculpt in clay, and I work with fused glass. Bullseye Glass is in the Portland area, where we lived for thirty-five years. I’ve taken dozens of classes there, and my studio here in Tucson is equipped for drawing, painting, clay work, and fused glass. Over the past four years, I’ve been working with Narcissus Quagliata, an internationally known fused glass artist and painter who invented many glass methods that I now use. Here are a few images of my glasswork.

When teaching art I would often remind my students about the building blocks that help us create art. The elements of art: line, shape, form, space, value, color and texture. The principles of art: rhythm, movement, balance, proportion, variety, emphasis and unity. I would say that though I think about all of these things as I work, that I focus most on: line, color, movement and unity.
Moving to Tucson and joining the Southern Arizona Arts Guild Gallery and the Desert Artisans’ Gallery has been rewarding and fun. The camaraderie between the artists, the ability to interact with the customers and community- everything about it has been fulfilling. I’ve found my art home here in Tucson!
