Artist statement:

I am inspired by the spirit of the Southwest people, the incredible landscapes, the intense light and shadows, the shapes, the colors, and how the precious water in this arid region interacts with all of the other elements. I love to work in many different mediums, and experimentation is something that motivates and challenges me. My work reflects the way that I feel about the magic of the Southwest.

Biography:

Kim T McKay grew up in Utah, drawing and painting alongside her father and her brother, and has always been fascinated and inspired by the Southwest desert country. Tucson, Arizona has been her home on and off for over 20 years. She studied architecture at the University of Utah and graduated in 1986 with a Master of Architecture degree. As a registered architect she worked in architecture, project management and facility management for over 30 years, most recently as Assistant Vice President for Facilities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Though she had limited time during her working years, she took mural painting and bronze casting in her spare time, as well as dabbled in painting, drawing, and mosaics. After completing her career in 2017 she immersed herself in her art. She has recently worked in charcoal, oils, pastels, and cold wax, though now her work is focused primarily on acrylic and mixed media.
